Each Sunday, I go to church,” aka the beach. I bundle myself and Milo up, and we go for a walk. I do a short meditation and set my intentions for the week. This particular Sunday past, when we arrived, one of the first people I encountered was a jogger wearing a t-shirt that read:
Dream; Believe; Hustle; Achieve!
Now, if you have been following me, you know I don't subscribe to coincidence. Everything has a meaning and a purpose, so I took this as a message that since the previous week we focused on our dreams, I would shift my topic this week, and we focus on the power of Belief, as the two go hand in hand.
“The future belongs to those who Believe in their Dreams” - Eleanor Roosevelt.
Self-doubt is the killer of dreams. Unfortunately, it has many sources, both internal and external. Overcoming this particular hurdle may be far more difficult than, say, writing a business plan or deciding on what your brand should look like. How do we overcome this? As a coach, one of the things I do is identify the self-sabotage that rears its ugly head in the form of excuses and procrastination. If behaviours become truly destructive, I will often recommend a client look into therapy as there may be underlying issues that need to be dealt with & require more digging. Coaches deal with changing behaviour to optimize your outcomes, not deep the deep scars left from trauma.
How do you turn belief into a tangible business?
Typically, identifying the self-sabotaging behaviour and creating awareness will keep clients on track. Taking that dream and putting it in writing, working out all the nuances of what it looks like will make you see the possibilities. Self-doubt lives in your head, but a tangible dream lives on paper. The more you break things down, the more possible they become and the easier they will achieve. Once you have built a solid foundation, believing in yourself and your business is easy. I preach business plan writing for just this reason.
A business with no plan plans to fail (period).
The beauty of the business plan is it will change as your business grows and evolves. The dream you had when you started will morph with experience, and new ideas emerge. Just like a house, once you build the foundation, you can renovate and redecorate all you like; it is still your house.
Believing is not just a feeling; it's an action, and that action is what keeps you going. Add the elements of visualization and positive affirmations, BAM! you have the trifecta for success. Creating a visual representation of your business that you keep in your workspace will remind your subconscious mind what it needs. This will also help to keep that self-doubt at bay. As for the naysayers, when you hit them with your pitch, they can either put up or shut up, insert mic drop!
So, take the actions you need to make your business a success!
